The first time that I fell in love it was with a parrot
whom I was allergic too
and was promptly gotten rid of
The seconds time it was with a girl who had a birthmark
the shape of which I remeber distinctly
but not the girl
The third time it was with a car, blue with white on the sides
That ended, however, when a careless neighbor - the owner as it happened to be
drove my love into a tree
The fourth time it was with a cousin who visits once a year
and found the time in between visits
to marry young
The fifth time it was with a pretty thing whose capacity to love
exceeded that of the car,I'll grant her that
but not by much
The sixth time it was with a classmate who I stared at often
when I should have been doing the work
and may have cost me a spectacular academic career
The seventh time it was with a married woman
who thanked me for not being a hunter
Little did she know it was not for the lack of trying
The eighth time it was with a childhood friend who lost no time
in putting an ocean between us
and a big one at that
The ninth time it was the sixth time all over again
stronger this time and more hopeful
but no more useful or successful than a broken nail
