Re: Holiday Gifts and Receptions
With the holiday season upon us, I would like to remind you that in accordance with the Rutgers Code of Ethics it is inappropriate for Rutgers employees to accept personal gifts or items of value from individuals or organizations conducting business with the university. Any gift received by an employee from a vendor must be returned. Perishable items received as gifts should be donated to a local soup kitchen or charity rather than simply placed out for all employees to share.
If you receive a gift from a vendor, you should send a note to the individual or firm who gave you the gift explaining why you cannot accept it and that it is being returned or that it was donated to charity. A sample letter can be found on the Ethics at Rutgers website. Please note that gifts or benefits of a nominal value from a vendor, such as complimentary calendars, pens/pencils, or items offered to the general public through mass mailings, need not be returned if their use does not create the impression of an endorsement.
Additionally, since vendor holiday parties and receptions primarily serve a social purpose, you should refrain from attending such events. As employees of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, we all need to be aware of the importance of maintaining the public trust.
